HAPPIEST SEASON 😊

HAPPIEST SEASON was the one holiday-themed movie of 2020 that I was looking forward to the most, and while it didn’t quite live up to my expectations, it’s definitely entertaining. Kirsten Stewart and Mackenzie Davis play Abby and Harper respectively, a young couple in love who plan to visit Harper’s family in the country for Christmas. Unfortunately for Abby, Harper’s family doesn’t know she’s gay and thinks Abby is her roommate. This is the first of many red flags for Abby who is now forced to spend a holiday she already dislikes with Harper’s dysfunctional and self-absorbed family while being forced back into the closet.

As much as I appreciate the filmmakers’ effort to feature a lesbian relationship, I only wish it was a bit more healthy than the one in this film. Co-writer Mary Holland shines as Harper’s sister Jane, while Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy prove to be scene-stealers. Kristen Stewert’s Abby is also wonderful, and I enjoyed seeing both her and Mackenzie Davis bring their talents to this romantic comedy. The story misses its chance to take a stand for healthy relationships and instead takes a more predictable approach, to my disappointment.

Come for the love story, stay for the strong ensemble cast.
